I believe that the diction adds to the main message of " Daffodils" by leveling up the sophistication of the poem, while still demonstrating the old age of the poem. This poetic device is used in " Daffodils" simply because the poem is quite old, and is quite sophisticated. The higher level of the words used help to demonstrate the formal diction. An example would be lines fifteen and sixteen, "A poet could not be gay, In such jounced company.". The poem is both simple and complex, because although the lines are short, and there are plenty of rhymes, the message of solitude and freedom shines through with a passion that hides behind many lines.Īs I analysed this poem, the first poetic device that caught my attention was the high leveled diction. I would describe the mood of " Daffodils" by calling it uplifting and thought provoking. In my personal opinion, this poem is about freedom and freeing yourself from what drags you down.
